Margaret Stock is a “genius” for finding solutions that combine immigration with national security

This week Lawyer Margaret Stock was awarded the “genius grant” of $625,000 over five years by the Mac Arthur Foundation. She uses her experience as an attorney, a lieutenant colonel in the Military Police Corps and a professor at West Point Stock to find solutions that address the issues of   immigration and national security.  Her famous program, Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest (MAVNI) was designed for immigrants who were health-care professionals or language experts.

Stock has done an excellent job because it is a win-win situation. It is clear that part of the problem is the already broken immigration system that has yet to be fixed but there are always “more important” issues to take care of than the immigration system. But, the worst part is that the government allowed the military to enlist noncitizens to fight for this country and yet they still had to wait about fifteen years to get their green card. It is sad to see that people took MAVNI as a gift from heaven because we are still waiting on a comprehensive immigration reform. Fortunately this was changed thanks to Stock as of April 2009 the Homeland Security tests soldiers and naturalizes them at training. This is a great opportunity but I think there should be other ways to prove your patriotism and loyalty to the country you call home. Yes. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”) has allowed the dreamers to continue their education and work but since it is an executive order once a new president takes office the program could be eliminated, if congress does not pass a comprehensive immigration reform.
