Are blacks better off now then we were before Obama took office?

According to Tavis Smiley, an African-American author and liberal political commentator, by the end of the Obama administration, blacks will have lost ground in every economic indicator category. The message has been constantly repeated throughout the black community that Barack Obama has done nothing for the black community since he has been in office. How many people who actually say this have done their research on the Obama administration? Sometimes I feel like as a race, when Obama got elected, we were expecting an executive version of the black panthers. We expected Obama to only focus on the needs of blacks, which I would not respect if he were to do that. The simple fact of the matter is no one is better off than they were before the Obama administration. Congress and the Obama administration's failure to work together as a team for the betterment of this country and its' people has resulted in a reluctance of passing legislation. Our government has been a failure for a long time, even before the Obama administration. So, are blacks worse off than before the Obama administration? It depends on how you look at it. Is the country worse off than it was before the Obama administration? That's a question that still has time before it can be answered.

  1. I will say, that I agree with you in the respect that once Obama was elected, many thought that he would do a lot for the African American community. But, as a president, it is his job to represent the nation as a whole, regardless of race. I think many times people forget that Obama is just as much black as he is white. Regardless, we need to move away from race and look at how he is helping the people as a whole. Where I disagree with you is when you state, "The simple fact of the matter is no one is better off than they were before the Obama administration". To state that is a huge fallacy. You cannot say that no one is better off. The LGBT community is much better off now than when Bush was president. Women now have access to contraceptives at a low or free cost. Health care is now accessible to those who were once denied due to previous existing conditions. Thousands of soldiers are home from wars that were started by Bush. Terrorists have been caught, and our overall security has been better. So to say that no one is better off, is completely false.

  2. It depends on what perspective you look at it from. That's my whole point. There are people that are against LGBT rights in America, so if you ask them, they will tell you this country is going to hell. There are religious communities who believe that contraceptives are a sign that our country is moving away from it's god-fearing origins, so if you ask them, they will tell you we are much worse off now. There are a large community of people who feel like the government is taking money out of their pockets to give out "freebies". For every argument, there are many different perspectives for what is right/wrong. So, it is not a fallacy for many Americans.

  3. But it is a fallacy. You have to look at what is right and wrong. To deny a group of minorities is immoral. Therefore, our country is going in the right direction. We are going in a direction that is providing basic rights. For those who do not agree, it is because it does not affect them. They have their ideas but their ideas become wrong when it involves denying minorities a basic right.
