Government Shutdown in effect until Compromise is met

Today marks the 123rd anniversary of Yosemite National Park. Unfortunately, due to the government shutdown Yosemite is not open for its own birthday. Instead, like the other state parks and other government services, Yosemite will remain closed until an agreement on the budget is passed. Fox news says, "A prior Republican effort to include a provision defunding ObamaCare in the budget bill failed. House Republicans then voted, early Sunday, to add amendments delaying the health care law by one year and repealing an unpopular medical device tax." Senate Democratic leader, Reid, said that Republicans have "lost their minds". Mitch McConnel, Senate Republican leader countered, "“Senate Democrats have made it perfectly clear that they’d rather shut down the federal government than accept even the most reasonable changes to ObamaCare,” President Obama was hoping that congress would come together in the final hour. Obviously that was not the case.
What bothers me about the government shutdown is the fact that because both sides couldn't come to a compromise and the government had to shutdown in the first place. The key to compromise is BOTH sides giving up a little. The point of a compromise is to come to a middle ground and Democrats and Republicans can't reach it. I wonder what the Founding Fathers would have thought of this. Since there is nothing in the Constitution that would help clear this matter up, it's reasonable to assume that the Constitution doesn't provide a solution for budgetary dilemmas, which seem to be resulting in a government shutdown. James Madison, who can be considered the father of the Constitution, warned of factionalism in America, but that is why he was in favor of the checks and balances system. It was set up so that the government could work together and that the power was divided, but Madison never imagined it could get to the point where a compromise wasn't reached and that the government would shut down. I hope we can reach a compromise sooner rather than later because October 17th is closing in and that marks the limit to the debt ceiling and the government will have yet another problem to face.

  1. With a possibility of another government shutdown due to lack of unity, I guess it is wise if people will acquire a bill cover insurance for extra protection.
